Puppy biting is one of the most common challenges owners face… whilst it is totally normal, it can be daunting to deal with if you don’t know what to do!
Here are some simple tips to help prevent and stop puppy biting!
🐶 Over excitement can invoke puppies to bite and nip, so try not to allow them to chase things that could create that arousal and they then nip as a byproduct. Chasing incites prey drive to kick in and it’s natural for them to want to bite. The easiest solution is intervene, redirect or prevent this pattern.
🐶 Puppies have short attention spans, so distracting them onto another activity is really effective. It can be walking to another location, inviting them out in the garden or using food or a toy. Make this the preferential item to interact with.
🐶 Tired puppies are more likely to bite, so ensure your puppy gets sufficient sleep! This needs to be uninterrupted and in a quiet space, ideally.
🐶 Learn your puppy’s signs of tiredness and put them in bed as they show these signals, this prevents matters escalating and also creates an association of this place being somewhere to sleep.
🐶 Puppy biting is normally a phase. Be patient! Using corrections and punishment will only damage your relationship and potentially create an association to noise, sounds or you. Remember, they are babies and it will pass.
