Ever find yourself saying “sit, sit, SIT!” and your dog still looks at you like you’ve lost the plot? 😅 Here’s the truth: your dog doesn’t understand the word until you’ve taught them what it means.
👉 A verbal cue is not magic. It’s simply a signal – and it only works if it’s been clearly paired with a behaviour your dog already understands.
✅ Here’s how to do it:
1️⃣ Get the behaviour first. Use food, lures, or shaping to get a consistent sit (or down, or spin – whatever you’re working on!).
2️⃣ Add the word after the behaviour is predictable. Say “sit” just before you know your dog is about to do it. Timing is key!
3️⃣ Repeat and reinforce. The more you pair the cue with the action + reward, the faster your dog will connect the dots.
🚫 Don’t say the word before your dog knows what to do – that’s like giving a foreign language instruction with no subtitles. Confusing and frustrating for both of you.
👂 A clear cue = a confident dog who knows exactly what you’re asking for.
