‘It ain’t what you do it’s the way that you do it’ or at least that’s what they say.
🐶 But certainly when it comes to using Food in training, this is definitely true.
Often people use food in the way that creates a passive response. The dog is conditioned to see food as something to lower arousal. And whilst this may be a useful tool in certain circumstances, you could be missing a trick.
🐶 You are missing a massive opportunity to create a dog that can work in any situation and be focused and use Food as the reinforcement. This is helpful with food motivated dogs, who struggle with focus, or dogs that have arousal issues with toys but you still want them engaged and animated.
🐶 It is easy to create a conditioned response to food, by delivering it in a way that is slow and steady or the dog is coming to a stop and the person inevitably feeds them.
So even whilst the dog may have moved prior, the dog has been conditioned to slow up to grab the food.
